Every Day thousands and millions of baby are born. We have only 365 days in a year and the population is in millions and just do some math and find how many babies are born every day. And each new born baby whether its a girl or a boy a name is given to him/her which identifies the baby for rest of his/her life.
Really !! It is such an important thing in ones life and few parents just pick the name randomly. But responsible parents usually devote some time to pick a name.
In most of the communities naming child has to go through some kind of custom/religious practices and yes, Yes more than 60% of the world names ( or at least the first Alphabet of the name ) are picked through community/custom the respective family follows.
Sikh baby names or child born in Sikh family is no exclusion to this. So how a child gets his name ?
Why do we go to a Sikh Gurudwara ( Sikh Temple/Church/Place of worship ) to name a new born baby?
I request you all if any one has any answer to this and can open the folds behind it. I am not saying that it is right or wrong i am just interested in the story or any kind of Punjabi folk tail behind it.

I don't know, but it sure is interesting! (Re: the journey to the temple.)
Maybe a higher power will intervene and help name the baby?
according ot me....its a way of providing respect to waherguru...and its essential for a better life also
it is because before he/she is called by some other name, he/ she is left in the hands of waheguru representing u are the one who gave birth.... let him/her follow the right path...he/she is in our hands now....keep guiding and never leave him/her alone.
Its practice that the name is given by head of family, and in the case of sikhs, its the Guru who is head of family. So to mark respect, this is done, moreover, to expect the child will grow and be lile their beloved guru
It is done in order to copy all the things from Hindu religion. Most of the things are copied from Hinduism. How can a 35 Letter Language and its Vowels can be used to name a large number of babies ? There is nothing in a name. All depends upon the work one do in his life. None of the Guru has named there children like that.
as per me,,,,,,,we all are the children of one Guru and our name must be given by him
Sikhs belive the eternal Guru is the Guru GRANTH Sahib. More correctly the guru to be Guru Shabad. So as you may go to any elderfor advice and when they give you advice they give you choices. So opening the Guru Granth sahib andpick the first and the letters gives choice andif you cannot find an name of yourchoice you may use the second letter.
According to me,we all are children of god and we give our first respect to our GURUS.Thats why we think it is vry important.
I believe that, this is not a hard and fast rule to go to gurdwara so as to find the baby name. The most important point is to listen to the lines being read in sikh temple by the priest or bhai ji and understand as per your maximum possible positive approach or thinking towards truth.
Going to gurdwara always gives pleasure to some..may be to all!
Sikhs connects to guru throughout their life.
when the baby is born this naming forms a first connection with the guru.
we give so much respect to guru ji that even naming(most important to an individual) the person we start it from guru ji
The gurdwara is said to be the home of the Guru or doorway into a guru's house, the term being derived from Punjabi (Punjabi: ਗੁਰ), gurū, A teacher, religious guide and Punjabi (Punjabi: ਦੁਆਰਾ) duārā, m.s., A door. People of all religious backgrounds or of no religious faith are welcomed into a Sikh Gurdwara. However, it is necessary that any visitors remove their shoes, wash their hands and cover their head with a rumāl before entering the Darbar Sahib.

Devotees will sit cross-legged on the floor[1]. All those who enter the hall must remove their shoes, wash their hands and cover their heads before entering. On entering the hall, devotees walk slowly and respectfully to the main throne (called the takht) on which the Guru Granth Sahib rests. Devotees then stand before the Holy Scriptures

Hi as i think this is the way to give respect to our Guru "Shri Guru Granth Sahib ji" that we are taking name for our loved one from our Guru.

In our country every year born about 100 thousands babies and dieing about 10 thousands...
I think its very silly to refer to this custom as a 'Sikh' custom. If anything its just another of those baggages we carry over from when our anscestors were Hindu. Its harmless so not saying there's anything wrong in it but I do worry we're sinking ever deeper back into mindless rituals.....which was the reason our anscestors left Hinduism in the first place. I have 2 children and neither of them were named via this method. Historically, Sikh names do not share anything in common with India anyway. The Persian names of the early Sikhs and the French army rank names of the last generation (Jarnail, Karnail etc) bear testament to this. The sooner we rid ourselves of the ritual ties to Hinduism the greater the lesser the chance of sikhism being swallowed up by hhinduism.
It is believed that by Hukam of Guru Sahib, we got child,so it is Guru's bless. So his/her name should be named by Guru Sahib and way of find name in Guru Granth is order or wish of Guru ji.
